Who:Amateur bakers from all over the NYC-metro area, competing in two categories: Sweet and Savory. The judges for this year’s event are: Jeff Chin of i8and8, mastermind behind the i8and8 supper club,  Andy Yang of Rhong Tiam, a Michelin-starred restaurant, Lin Randolph of Alecia's Bakery, an artisanal online bakery that gives back to the community, and Marlo Scott, owner of Sweet Revenge, world's only cupcake, beer & wine bar. Great News! We have a location!

The Brooklyn Kitchen has graciously offered to donate space for this event. The Brooklyn Kitchen is a wonderful space in Williamsburg dedicated to those who love cooking. You can find out more about the genesis of this space here.

I am really excited to be collaborating with them and think that with The Brooklyn Kitchen's participation, this will be the best bake-off yet!

It's only early-September, but the heat is on to confirm all judges and nail down a location for the 3rd Annual NYC Bake-off!

The good news is that I've had firm commitments from 3 of the 4 judges honoring the event with their palettes:

The original bake-off judge, Jeff Chin. He is founder of i8and8 meet-up group and supper club and has been identified as "the walking Yelp".

We also have Andy Yang,Executive Chef/Owner of the Michelin-starred restaurant, Rhong-Tiam and past bake-off judge.

This year we also have Lin Randolph, head baker at Alecia's Bakery, an online artisanal bakery that also donates a portion of all their profits to local animal shelters and rescue groups.

We have one more judge pending, stay tuned!

And as for location, well all fingers point to Brooklyn - there'll be confirmation by the end of the week!

Last year, on May 18, 2010 I held my 2nd Annual Bake-Off on a downtown rooftop with:

60 fantastic attendees.
25 scrumptious entries.
3 fabulous judges (Jeff C., gastronome and founder of i8and8 supper club Andy Yang, Executive Chef/Owner of Rhong-Tiam and Marlo Scott, Owner of Sweet Revenge)
And three winners - 1 savory, 1 sweet and 1 most popular.

My donation goal of $250 for Share Our Strength's Great American Bake Sale was not only met at the bake-off, but surpassed with a total of $315 made!

You can find out more about last year here. And you can read about what the attendees thought of the event here.

This year, I plan on going bigger and bolder - with a new location, beverage sponsors and a broader range of baked goods. Of course there will still be friendly competition, prizes and the opportunity for all amateur bakers out there to test out new recipes and push the limit of their culinary mastery.

Categories for 2011 are as follows:

1) Savory - this means any bakery good with a predominance of savory ingredients in it, i.e. herbs, cheese, etc.

2) Sweet - whatever is sugar and spice and everything nice (no, do not bake little girls). Basically if it's sugary goodness, it's in. (that includes cakes, cookies, bars, pies, etc.)

3) Most Popular - it's what the people want! (there is anonymous voting done throughout the setting up and tasting, and a final count is done during the official judging).

Why: Because winning something is cool, right? Right!?

Prizes: They'll be cool!

Stay tuned for more information about this years bake-off on October 16, 2011, from 1pm-4pm.
